Brief description of physical appearance:

Blind since birth, Fair, 5 ft 3 inches, 7 stone 7 lbs, Dress: 8, Shoe: 5

 

I have been working professionally as a model since 2002 and am one of a very small handful of professional, visually impaired models, working in the UK.

 

I was privileged to have the opportunity of working with the legendary, New York-based photographer, Joe McNally, for three days, when I was just ten years old. He took photos of me at home, at school, on the beach, riding my bike and even at our local pick-your-own fruit fields! Thousands of photos, just for one elusive image, which appeared in the National Geographic later that year. Those three days gave me an excellent grounding in how to achieve a good natural photograph, which came in very handy years later, although at the time, I just thought it was a rather novel, if slightly strange experience.

 

More recently, I was lucky enough to be chosen as the subject for a marble sculpture (Anna Cannings: blind from birth), produced by the Internationally renowned sculptor, Marc Quinn. Not something I thought I would ever be asked to do – another first in my career - but an enjoyable and unique one.

 

The range of images on this page reflects the diversity of the modeling assignments I have undertaken, which have ranged from highly stylized shoots for artists and fashion articles, to consumer and lifestyle publications, and publications for the corporate sector.

 

I am represented for my modelling work by VisABLE People, a National agency, representing professional actors and models with disabilities. Although it is a specialist agency, set up to help the advertising industry and artists find a minority group of models more easily, and to provide management specifically for models with disabilities, the agency believes very strongly in the inclusive and creative use of disabled models, i.e. not just featuring us in disability-specific campaigns, but featuring us in TV advertising, magazines, catalogues, posters etc, as normal, everyday consumers – which is exactly what we are!
